Galéjade is an archive of recordings, made by ADT between 2009 and today. Julie and Olivier have unearthed from their hard drives demos, live recordings, a live soundtrack for a screening (Claire, by Milford Thomas) and other unreleased rarities.

Accident du Travail: Galéjade (Disques Charivari)

Accident du Travail’s trés prècieux sang is one of my favorite records on The Trilogy Tapes, and unlike virtually anything else on the label—recorded on harmonium and ondes Martenot, it’s haunting, meditative, and entirely beatless, and evokes feelings of sitting in an empty church in midwinter. Galéjade gathers archival material dating back to 2009—demos, live recordings, a short snippet of a score to Milford Thomas’ silent film Claire—and it hits similar notes. Once again, Julie Normal plays the ondes Martenot, an early electronic keyboard instrument with a ghostly tremolo sound, while Olivier Demeaux plays harmonium and “machines”; given that these pieces stretch back across a 14-year span, they’re remarkably consistent in tone—quiet, contemplative, muted; not really “drone” music, per se, but nevertheless melodically and harmonically restrained, as though each track were patiently mulling over a single thought. The (ersatz?) saxophone of “Conférence N°2 (33 RPM)” reminds me, faintly, of Cole Pulice or Motion Graphics (whatever happened to him?); the live recording “Le Noir Pays (Cafe OTO)” is a shimmering expanse of microtonal harmonies. The whole thing is gorgeous, and, despite being billed as a clearinghouse of hard-drive strays, plays out almost like an album proper. With any luck, there’ll be one of those on the way soon.
